What to do when the sea is flat

Sport climbing and bouldering

Did you know that Peniche, home of world class waves, is also a hub for sport climbing in Portugal? Yes, and in fact, one of the pioneers of sport climbing in Portugal chose Peniche as his home due to the number of excellent routes in the surrounding area. He has this year opened his very own climbing gym, right here in Peniche!

Peniche Crag

We have the most scenic routes imaginable right above the waves at the cliff head of Peniche peninsula. Let the sound of the ocean tune out all other noise and let you get in the zone as you scale the sandstone rock. Imagine then diving straight into the ocean (always get local guidance first to avoid the rocks) to cool off!

Montejunto

Just a drive away, we have the protected mountain reserve of Montejunto, with a breathtaking view over the countryside as far as Peniche and beyond. Montejunto offers a wide range of routes, from 4s to 8bs!

Also well worth the hike even without climbing! Bring a picnic and enjoy the south-facing hillside while your comrades scale the limestone.

Reguengo do Fetal

A little north, we sometimes fill up the car and treat ourselves to an all day expedition to Reguengo do Fetal, which seems to have more routes than we can project in a lifetime!

Another heaven for hikers, with many sunny picnic spots. Just be sure to bring enough water!

If you are a seasoned climber, bring along your gear and we invite you to join us on our (weekly but often more frequent, weather-dependent) climbing expeditions.

If you are a total newbie, fear not. You will be in good hands at the West Climbing Center and maybe we'll even get you onto a crag during your stay.
